Sorry if it came as ignorant, but aren't huis just the name of hans muslims, or is this a different ethnic group ?

  • Hi!

Hui is a diverse ethnic group bc it groups a lot of diff types of communities from across China together. The official definition are Chinese Muslims who are descended from Persian silk road traders and intermixed with locals, so in theory Hui are Chinese with Persian ancestors that, due to Hui communities being historically very very closed to outsiders, managed to retain a unique identity and culture. A Han convert to Islam may have been accepted as a Hui in the past if they married into a Hui community, but in modern day due to the ethnic grouping system that is no longer the case, a Han Muslim revert is simply a Han Muslim. Same goes for non Han groups, as Hui have intermarried heavily with people in the regions they have lived in, as Hui tend to be a very non static group and historically migrated from place to place, creating pocket communities across the country that developed their own unique cultures.

Because Hui communities are very spread out and diverse though, different communities have different heritages. Although I dislike blood quantum and race science, and Hui communities who are mainly of Han heritage are no less Hui for it, for me Hui is a very central asian adjacent/descended identity as my mother’s community is very very closed and we have a fairly high percentage of central Asian blood, and are visibly different from a lot of other people around us. Most Hui do actually descend from west Asia though AFAIK, so lm not sure what led my mother’s community to have this sort of ethnic makeup.

Another thing to note is that Hui is very diverse community that kind of got jammed together when classification happened, so the official narrative doesn’t apply to everyone. The Utsuls of Hainan, a Chamic ethnic group, are also classified as Hui despite almost no ethnic similarity due to being Muslim. Non Han Muslims from non Muslim groups (ie groups that aren’t largely muslim such as Muslim Tibetan communities) also got classified as Hui. It’s kind of a ‘throw it all in there’ ethnicity as a result. Again, not all Hui proper are descended from Persians either, so it’s complicated.

Even 'Han’ is a complicated and diverse grouping with a lot of cultural and genetic variation, and there are certainly minority groups who can be considered one family ethnically and still have separate cultures and labels. I’m not sure what you mean by 'Han Muslim’, do you mean culturally? Ethnically? Linguistically? Culturally speaking Hui are diverse due to how we ended up getting grouped together, so some Hui are closer to Chinese culture and some are farther away. Ethnically same deal, as I said earlier. Linguistically most Hui do speak Chinese, some speak the local dialect and others speak a mix of Chinese and Persian/Arabic, usually if they come from an autonomous region. These three factors also aren’t tied to each other, a majorly ethnic han heritage Hui community might be more culturally distinct than a nearly completely Casian Hui community, especially if they’ve been closed or majority Hui for a long time, which can mean centuries.

Hope this helps! I find a lot of people even within China don’t know much about us, especially since we have a reputation for being exclusive and withdrawn to outsiders or non Hui, so Im glad to share!

  • I know I never respond to asks (I’ll start responding this coming week I promise im like 8 months behind) but does anyone want to randomly say something to me bc I miss the rush of getting a notification for my ask box alskdkkgtkdjfj pls tell me anything u want 🙏 random infodumps, character analysis, random fact, whatever

  • It doesnt sit right with me how tragedies that happened in China are used to silence Chinese people who talk about racism over here. Yes I know a lot of it is propaganda but let’s assume for a second that everything the west says about China really is true:

As far as you know we were victimized back there, and now you use that fact to victimize us here? As far as you know the pictures you saw were of our dead bodies, and you use this to shut us up about being treated badly over here?

I don’t understand the logic aside from they just hate us. Bad things happened to us in our country… so we deserve being abused outside of the country as well? Why? Why are you justifying treating us badly with ‘your parent’s classmates must have been massacred back then’? How is the fact that we were apparently all suffering in our own country make us deserve suffering in another country? Following their logic and beliefs about China 100% leads to nothing but cruelty and seething hatred.

  • Why do people say ‘I think you’re talking about people who’ve hurt you before and not me 🥺’ when you tell them they’re being racist lol like yes thats what racism is. Patterns and structures. One person playing into slit eyed Asians doesn’t make racism but slit eyed Asian depictions being associated with harsher and more brutal/violent forms of racism is what makes them bad so when someone only uses the slit eyes part and not the violence part, it carries baggage. It IS because people have hurt us before and will hurt us again, and your racismposting is one part of the web. They always see racism as individual faults and never a system

  • I do stay away from China related departments and classes at my uni bc u know those white profs with Asian wives are racismmaxxing in ways I can’t even begin to imagine or comprehend

  • Hate this fandom hate everyone in it I’m in my hater era. Racism is unending and I will never be freed irl or online

    Another case of racism

You portrayed China in a very racist tone, as a Chinese girl, I want to kindly tell you to delete this post immediately because spreading art like this can lead to more racism, please search the term “yellow peril” and the history of violence and dehumanisation of Asian men.

You portrayed China as a “yellow man” who is trying to flirt with poor white woman (Belarus)

This is fucking racist and rooted in orientalism and yellow scare.

I know you have it bad as a Slavic person, but I am Chinese, my people are murdered, we are considered enemies of the state by every fucking country and my people were victimised because of covid and historical racism, Chinese people don’t feel safe anywhere we go, and this type of art not only made me unsafe but also my other fellow East Asian friends.

Please delete this art piece and apologise, we don’t need more racist charicatures of Asians in this fandom.

  • Dear op,

I drew this as an irony about Belarus and the fact that Minsk airport is full of Chinese signboards. I never thought about any racism.

Lukashenko keeps giving Belarus resources to random people, and Belarus' actual neighbours often laugh at it. Because in such situation, eventually, all suffer: e.g., Belarus uni students who have to practice in much worse places than Chinese students by exchange (I was complained about it) and Chinese people who came to Belarus thinking "wow it would be super easy to study and live here" - and then it's not. It's Belarus and Lukashenko's regime, a trap for foreigners, who believe it will be easy to get to Europe through it.

This drawing is not coloured. Why do you keep saying "yellow"? Because of the eyes shape? What is wrong with having such eye shape? My Korean friend has those, and I think it looks lovely. Or is it because he's quite short here? I draw Ukraine as a shortie, how is that racist? It's like if you called me racist because I draw people from Nigeria as black.

I am deeply concerned about Asian people being obsessed with white-washing themselves. Just because some bastards take your existing features of appearance to make them look as something bad in caricatures, in ads (to sell you more cosmetics and stuff, to portray you as "not humans enough"), doesn't mean it's bad. Having yellowish/olive/bronze/dark/etc skin is not bad (and it's not a feature of Asian people only btw). Having narrow eyes is not bad! We have such a beautiful diversity to draw Asian characters white and with round eyes only?

I did some posts about Uyghur genocide and Tiananmen Square massacre, so I know you don't have it easy. However, I kindly disagree with the "we are considered enemies of the state by every fucking country". In Lithuania, for example, a country I currently live in and a country Chinese people seem to dislike, there is a whole faculty of Confucianism and Chinese culture in Vilnius University. There are also Taiwanese students and Taiwan supporting cafés as well, but I hope it wouldn't be a problem for you.

I can delete this drawing if you tell me how, in your opinion, China should look like. However, if you tell me he should have white skin and big Caucasian eyes, I will kindly reject it.

P.S. My goal was to make people feel what Belarus feels. Although the reaction seems a bit excessive to me, it looks like the goal was reached. Objectively speaking, China is not doing anything bad here.

P.S.S. I am not just a Slavic Person, I am Ukrainian.

    Best wishes,

    Unhonestly Mirror.

  • Sorry for jumping in I just wanted to say there are faculties of Chinese culture in my uni and a Confucius institute down the street from me and that doesn’t stop the white people here from calling me slurs and the white profs from being creeps to me :) ‘liking Chinese culture’ has always gone hand I hand with condescending racism and fetishization, aside from having read about the connection I know this because I lived this every fucking day growing up in a majority white country. They all love Chinese culture, especially the racist ones. 'A country Chinese people seem to dislike’ is also wild, there are over a billion Chinese people and I promise the majority have no idea where Lithuania is, because its a small country that is nowhere near China’s borders and most normies can’t even name all the countries that border us, I can see why you chose to portray China this way if your main impression comes from translations of terminally online netizens. Drawing Asians with slit eyes that we GENERALLY DO NOT HAVE IRL is literally classic racial caricature, I don’t know why white people have to bend over backwards to justify it and lecture us when we are bothered by it. Like, almond eyes are overdone but at least they’re more accurate to reality??? I’m also shocked you instantly brought up politics when Kimetsu was clearly talking about racism specifically, but not really because of course you did, all the white people who shouted slurs at or hate crimed Asians in white countries blamed it on politics lol catch all defense huh? Hope you have fun with your sit eyed yellow man harasses white woman art tho it’s not like whites ever care about how their racism affects poc

Also, as an ethnic minority, randomly bringing up shit like Tiananmen and Uyghur genocide out of NOWHERE is insane and reprehensible. Kimetsu was talking about the racist undertones and you use this shit to respond to them? I knew we were racially politicized before but jfc.

As @hws-bonete mentions, though we may disagree with each other otherwise, you can draw other Asians fine, even other colonizing Asians like Japan. So why are slit eyes only reserved for the evil dirty Asian you dislike aka China? Interesting lol. Chinese people = gov in English speaking and western spaces is literally the problem people are trying to deal with because it’s what gets us hate crimed, so I don’t think its nearly as innocent, esp since as mentioned Bela obviously isn’t representing her gov. Finally, uni students? White uni students and sexpats literally come to China to take advantage of privilege and abuse women and there are entire youtubers who’s channels are just that, to the point where my cousin back home has to be careful around her male white english teacher, but drawing America or England being evil sexpats hurting China EVEN THOUGH ITS TRUE would be in bad taste so…
